Springtails for a Terrarium: Culture, Transfer & Care

Choose a culture that fits the habitat
“Springtails” covers many animals, not one universal care requirement. Ask for the culture's identification and method. NEHERP's charcoal-culture instructions apply specifically to Folsomia candida; they should not automatically be copied for every colored or tropical trade culture.
Select a culture suited to the moisture and temperature of the habitat. A moist refuge matters even when the exposed tank surface is drier. Do not change the primary animal's entire habitat just to suit a cleanup crew.
What they can and cannot do
Springtails consume fungi and organic residues within the substrate system. They are useful partners in a bioactive habitat, but a visible mold bloom can still signal an excessive food input or persistent saturation.
Remove spoiled supplements and inspect water management. More springtails cannot drain a waterlogged substrate, remove unlimited waste, or substitute for cleaning significant animal waste.
Maintaining a reserve culture
For its F. candida method, NEHERP uses charcoal with water at the base and small additions of brewer's yeast. Use suitable culture charcoal, not barbecue briquettes containing additives. Other culture media require their own maintenance method.
Add food conservatively and observe it being consumed before replenishing. Keep the container out of direct sunlight and maintain its moisture. NEHERP reports a 65–80°F working range for this culture, with reduced production above the upper end; this is not a limit for all springtail species.
A reserve is useful because display populations are hard to count. Do not transfer the entire starter into a terrarium and then discover that there is nothing left to propagate.
Moving springtails into the terrarium
The Bio Dude describes tapping animals from suitable culture media or using water to float them from charcoal. Follow the method appropriate to the medium and deliver them near moist cover.
Avoid dumping a whole dense clay culture into a substrate that was designed to drain differently. With charcoal, a controlled transfer avoids tipping heavy pieces onto animals or plants. Retain enough of the source culture to continue it.
After introduction, inspect sheltered areas during normal maintenance. Not seeing animals on open glass does not establish failure.
Pairing with isopods
Springtails and isopods overlap in decomposer roles but operate at different scales. Isopods consume and fragment larger litter; springtails are useful around fungal growth and smaller residues. Neither makes the other unnecessary in every habitat.

FAQ
Do I need to feed them inside the display?
A functioning display supplies organic resources, but a newly built tank may be different. Observe the system and avoid adding large yeast portions indiscriminately. Concentrated culture feeding is not automatically a display feeding recipe.
Why did the culture stop producing?
Check moisture, food accumulation, temperature, and recent overharvesting. Verify its identity before applying instructions intended for another springtail.
