Powder Blue isopods are active detritivores often used in bioactive enclosures. They need a protected damp zone even when the surrounding habitat is relatively dry. Choose them for conditions you can maintain at substrate level, not simply because a tank is labeled tropical or arid.
Appearance and identity
The familiar form has a gray-blue, powdery appearance and a relatively slender outline. The British Myriapod and Isopod Group describes the characteristic bloom of Porcellionides pruinosus. Color can help recognize a familiar colony, but use diagnostic identification rather than color alone for wild specimens.
The World Isopod Database accepts P. pruinosus. Powder Blue and Powder Orange are traded as forms of that parent species, not separate formally named species. A formal species record and a commercial colony label are different kinds of evidence.
Moisture and temperature
The Bio Dude's powder care sheet gives a working range of 72–82°F and emphasizes damp retreats with ventilation. We report that range as the breeder's husbandry guidance, not an experimentally verified safe interval. Air temperature beside the tank may differ from conditions under a lamp or inside a closed bin.
Set up a moisture gradient you can inspect: a damp covered area, a less-wet area, and leaf litter connecting them. If the only refuge dries before your next check, the setup needs adjustment regardless of the room's humidity reading. Add cover or revise ventilation before increasing misting indefinitely.
Enclosure and substrate
A straightforward ventilated bin allows close observation of a starter culture. Provide organic substrate, bark, and leaf litter; do not rely on a thin layer of coconut fiber to supply the entire diet.

Feeding and population management
Powders are described as quick breeders by specialist suppliers, but production depends on colony condition. Feed to the animals you have today. An adult-rich starter group and a much larger established colony should not receive identical portions by habit.
Use the food guide to separate permanent litter from short-lived supplements. Check an accessible feeding spot, remove spoiled food, and increase portions only when consumption justifies it. This makes a change in appetite easier to notice.
Using powders with springtails
Powders fragment larger material while springtails use smaller resources, including fungal growth. They can share a suitable habitat, but neither removes the need for waste checks. A primary animal may also eat the cleanup crew, so maintain a backup culture if replacement animals would be difficult to obtain.

Size, activity, and colony milestones
Identification guidance for the parent species describes adults up to about 12 mm. That species-level figure is context, not a guarantee that every captive individual reaches the same size. Powders are quick-moving and may become conspicuous at food, while juveniles remain easy to miss among litter.
Record when several size classes appear and how quickly food and leaves disappear. Prepare a split before rapid growth overwhelms the maintenance routine. Common problems and FAQ
Why are they all under the damp hide?
It may be the best refuge available. Inspect moisture elsewhere before interpreting aggregation as a problem. A single snapshot cannot diagnose the enclosure.
Are orange powders better cleaners?
The reviewed sources do not establish an advantage caused by orange coloration. Select healthy stock and an appropriate habitat.
Can the colors be kept together?
They are traded within the same species. Keep colors separately if maintaining line identity matters; do not assume mixed offspring will preserve the original proportions.
