Zebra isopods can make a rewarding display colony if their enclosure offers both a damp refuge and less-wet surface areas. Avoid treating them as a permanently saturated tropical cleanup crew. The recognizable stripes are part of their appeal, but habitat conditions should determine the setup.
Identification and taxonomy
The familiar hobby animals have contrasting light bands on a dark, rounded body and can roll into a ball. Armadillidium maculatum is an accepted species in the World Isopod Database and GBIF. Use that binomial in records; “Zebra” alone is a common label.
The formal name does not establish a captive colony's exact collection locality. We do not assign a specific French locality to stock simply because a care sheet discusses southern European origins.
Difficulty and enclosure
Supplier assessments vary. Josh's Frogs describes hardy animals, while The Bio Dude rates them intermediate. Our intermediate label reflects the need to manage a moisture gradient and avoid assuming that a wet tank is automatically suitable; it is an editorial assessment, not a scientific ranking.
Use a container with enough floor area to separate damp cover from drier litter. Position an easily lifted bark hide where you can inspect animals without dismantling the habitat. Review physical enclosure choices before planning plants.
Substrate, moisture, and heat
Leaf-rich organic substrate supplies a working base, with leaves and hides above it. Keep a refuge damp while permitting other areas to dry more. “Drier” does not mean eliminating moisture from the whole enclosure.
The Bio Dude reports 72–80°F as an operating range. That is a breeder recommendation, not a tested limit. If adding heat, inspect the effect on substrate drying as well as temperature. A heat source can alter the refuge you intended to preserve.
Avoid copying another keeper's misting calendar. Check the substrate and adjust to the actual ventilation and room conditions.
Diet and plants
Offer decomposing leaves, wood, calcium, and modest supplements. Zebra colonies may nibble soft live plants, according to The Bio Dude. Plant damage therefore does not necessarily mean a cleanup crew has the wrong identity.
If preserving delicate plants is your priority, choose robust plantings or maintain the colony separately. Do not respond to every nibbled leaf by adding more rich food; first check whether the leaf litter has been exhausted.
Breeding and bioactive use
The sources describe reproduction inconsistently: supplier copy may call zebras quick once established while also describing them as relatively slow reproducers. We therefore do not publish a fixed maturation time or brood schedule.
In a display with animals that eat isopods, replacement births may not keep pace with predation. Establish a reserve culture and observe the balance rather than assuming visible adults guarantee a lasting colony. Powders offer a different practical option, but still need compatible conditions.

Zebras may become easier to see on litter and bark once a colony settles, but surface visibility changes with light, moisture, food, and disturbance. Inspect the same shelter at similar times and record juvenile size classes instead of treating one quiet day as a colony decline.
